 Happy new year 2023

happy newyear

The custom of celebrating the first day of the year as the New Year has been around for about four thousand years in human civilization. Today, New Year celebrations begin on the evening of December 31, the last day of the Gregorian calendar, known worldwide as New Year's Eve.

The first records of New Year celebrations date back to the fourth millennium BC in what was then Babylon. That festival was celebrated by the Babylonians in spring, at the end of March, when day and night were of equal length at the equinoxes. They used to commemorate the day by organizing a magnificent religious festival called 'Akitu'. According to Babylonian mythology, the sky god Marduk defeated the sea nymph Tiamat in a bloody battle. The Akitu festival of the Babylonians was a festival commemorating that victory. This is what they celebrated as New Year. The political significance of the festival was no less. On this day the new Babylonian king was crowned, or the reign of the old king was symbolically renewed.
A point needs to be made here about the calculation of years. Julius Caesar added an extra 90 days to the Roman calendar to align it with the sun. This is how the Julian calendar originated. Similarly, in the history of ancient civilizations, there are signs of different civilizations making calendars in different ways. But all the civilizations had one thing in common, the first day or month of the year was determined in accordance with the date of Navanna or the new harvest day. Not that there was no exception! In ancient Egypt, the last time of the year to call the Nile was the New Year, which coincidentally coincided with the rising of the elusive star. The Chinese celebrated the New Year on the second full moon day after the end of winter.

Why is January 1 considered the first day of the New Year?

In the beginning, the Roman calendar had a total of 304 days and 10 months. Each year began on the vernal equinox like the Babylonians. This calendar was created by Romulus, the founder of Rome. 8th century BC is going on then. Later, another Roman king, Pompilius, named the months January and February (present-day January and February). As a result of the annual motion of the earth, the year is completed, in one year i.e. 365 days, the earth completes one complete orbit around the sun. But the Roman calendar, with only 304 days in a year, failed to keep pace with the sun's annual motion.
For centuries flawed calendars were used to keep track of dates. The famous Roman emperor Julius Caesar wanted to solve this problem in 46 BC. He took the help of all the learned astronomers and mathematicians of Rome at that time and sat in discussion with them. By correcting this error, the Julian calendar was later developed, a modified version of which is the Gregorian calendar, which is used worldwide today. Julius Caesar chose January 1 as the first day of the year, because the month was named after the god Janus.
He was the Roman god of beginnings - Janus was believed by the Romans to see the past with one of his two heads and into the future with the other. The Romans recognized January as the first month of the year and January 1st as the first day of the year in honor of this great mythological god. Christian leaders in medieval Europe celebrated Jesus' birthday on December 25th as the first day of the year for a while. Later, however, in 1582 Pope Gregory XIII re-established January 1 as the first day of the New Year.
