Turtle Beach Turtles are an order of reptiles known as Testudines. They are mainly characterized by a shell developed from their ribs. Modern turtles are divided into two main groups namely side-necked turtles and hidden-necked turtles. These two groups differ in the way their heads are retracted. There are 360 living and recently extinct species of turtles, including land-dwelling tortoises and freshwater terrapins. They live on most continents, some on islands. On the other hand, sea turtles are found in most oceans. Like other reptiles, including birds and mammals, turtles breathe air and lay their eggs above water. However, many of its species live in or around water. Genetic evidence suggests that they are generally closely related to crocodiles and birds. Turtle shells are mostly made of bones.
