  What do snakes eat A  snake  is a long-bodied, carnivorous, cunning reptile without arms or legs. Lacking eyelids and external ears, snakes are distinguished from legless lizards. According to scientific taxonomy, the members of the order Fauna, order Chordata, order Vertebrata, class Reptilia, class Squamata, and subclass Serpentes are called snakes. Like all of the class Squamata, snakes are ectothermic ["outside" and ("hot") meaning a part that has an internal  heat-generating biological source. As far as is known, there are a total of 15 families, 456 genera, and more than 2,900 species of snakes. Their habitat ranges from Scandinavia in the far northern hemisphere too as far south as Australia. Snakes occur more or less on all continents except Antarctica, be it in the deepest depths of the oceans or on the high slopes of the mountains up to about sixteen thousand feet (4,900 m) in the Himalayas.
