As a member of the dicotyledonous plant family Asteraceae (formerly Compositae), sunflowers, daisies, chrysanthemums, and zinnias, as well as dahlias, began to be cultivated in gardens. Among the winter seasonal flowers, dahlias are the largest in size and attractive in color. There are 42 species of dahlias, with hybrids commonly seen as garden plants. Dahlia flowers are variable in structure, with one head per stem, they can be as small as 5 cm (2 in) in diameter or up to 30 cm (1 ft) ("dinner plate"). The dahlia was declared the national flower of Mexico in 1963. Dahlia flower tubers were grown as a food crop for the Aztecs, but this practice largely declined after the Spanish conquest.
