One thing can be understood very well from the name of the sunflower, this flower always faces the sun. But why this happens to this particular flower, scientists have been trying to find a clear answer for years. Everyone knows that every sunflower faces the sun during the day until matures. But after maturity, this flower no longer follows the sun in that way but is always seen facing the east. This orientation of young sunflower plants toward the sun is called `heliotropism`, which is explained by circadian rhythms. A plant has a biological clock-like mechanism that allows it to better understand the difference between day and night and when the sun rises and sets. Its name is the circadian rhythm, which is a 24- hour cycle. A young sunflower flower faces east the flower also turns west. At night it returns to its previous position of facing east and states the cycle again in the morning.

The sunflower is a well-known flower to everyone. Its oil is the best in quality. There is a huge demand for it all over the world. Bangladesh's commercial cultivation of sunflowers started in the sixties. At present, sunflower has been successfully cultivated in many countries of the world.

Sunflower cultivation methods
It is important to consistently follow certain rules for growing sunflowers. They are discussed step by step.
Suitable time and land for sunflower cultivation
Sunflower is a 6-month crop. The best time to sow sunflowers is November and December months. But this crop can be cultivated in May month also. Any elevated land that does not get waterlogged is suitable for sunflower cultivation. However, its yield is better in loamy soil.
Sunflower varieties
So far 3 varieties of sunflowers have been developed. Notable among them is- Kirani (DS-1). This breed was approved in 1992. The diameter of the variety is one and a half to two centimeters. Mature inflorescences or branches are 12 to 15 cm in diameter. The number of seeds per head is about 400 to 600. The seeds of this variety are black in color.
The average weight of 1000 seeds is 68-72 grams. About 44 percent of oil can be obtained from the seeds of this variety. Its life span is around 3 months to about 4 months. The average yield per hectare is 1.5 to 1.8 tonnes.
Prepare the soil for cultivation
For the cultivation of sunflower flowers, the land should be cultivated in a deep horizontal manner. After 5-6 times of cultivation, the soil should be loosened. Apart from any kind of cultivation, sunflowers are also grown by the dribbling method.
How to sow the seeds?
If you want to grow sunflowers commercially, then you have to grow them in rows. One bigha of land. The seeds can be sown throughout the year, but sowing between November and December gives higher yields.
when sowing seeds in rows, two seeds should be sown at a certain distance. The reason for sowing two seeds is that if one seed is likely to perish, then the other seed should sprout. If the seed becomes empty then the row may become empty.
Fertilizer application
Urea, TSP, MP, Magnesium Sulphate, Boric Acid, Gypsum, and Zinc Sulphate should be applied at specific rates in one bigha of land or 33 percent of the land. Care should be taken not to apply more chemical fertilizers to the land more organic fertilizers should be applied.
Other suggestions
Besides, there should be an irrigation system on the land. In order to get more yield, several irrigations should be given over a certain period of time. Regular weeding and weed control be done after the seedlings grow. If a disease is found in the sunflower plant, measures should be taken to remedy it.
