Fish is food, Hilsa Fish
Ilisha (scientific name: Tenualosa Elisha) is the national fish of Bangladesh. It is a marine fish, found in the rivers of Bangladesh and East India. Hilsa is very popular among Bengalis. Hilsa is also a very popular fish in various parts of India like West Bengal, Orissa, Tripura, and Assam. In 2017, Hilsa fish in Bangladesh was recognized as a Geographical Indication or GI product.
The word 'hilsha' is found in Bengali, the language of Assam, India, and in Telugu, hilsha is called plasma. Pallu machi is known as Pallu machi in Sindhi of Pakistan, and Ilishi in Oriya Ilisha fish is known as Moden (female) or Palva (male) in Gujarat. Hilsa is an economically important tropical fish. Large quantities of hilsa are caught every year from the delta of the Bay of Bengal, the estuaries of the Padma-Meghna-Yamuna rivers. It is a marine fish but this fish grows in big rivers. When the eggs hatch and grow (called jatka in Bengali), the hilsa fish returns to the sea. Fishermen catch this fish on their way back to the sea.
Although the hilsa is a saltwater fish or marine fish, it mostly lives in the sea but travels a distance of about 1,200 km to breed in the rivers of the Indian subcontinent. The common distance of rivers in Bangladesh is 50 km to 100 km. Hilsa is mainly found in abundance in the Padma (part of the Ganges), Meghna (part of the Brahmaputra), and Godavari rivers in Bangladesh. Padma hilsa is considered to have the best taste among them. Hilsa from the Rupnarayan river, Ganga, and Godavari Rivers in India are famous for their delicious eggs. Hilsa fish is also caught from the sea but the sea hilsa is not as tasty as the river fish. This fish is also found in the Sindh province of South Pakistan. There the fish is known as 'Palla'. This fish is also found in less quantity in the Thatta district. Currently, Palla or Hilsa is no longer seen due to the decrease in the water of the Indus River.
